Does any one know about clipped planchets? I was reading up on it because I found one and if you know about them enough to tell if they are the real deal I will post a pic.

Why not just post the picture? I'm no expert but I have read a little. Never saw one first-hand. The photo will help us all with our education.

Definitely not a rim dent. I would say it's a clipped planchet. Part of the rim is actually missing from the strike.

Thanks omahaorange. was wanting to try and sell on ebay because it is out side of the coins I collect and just wanted to know if anyone here can say if it is real or fake. I definatly dont want to sell a bad coin. I come from a background in construction and I would think that with a punch and a file or dremel you could possibly reproduce it. Was wandering if there is some kind of formula or something for the outer diameter of the coin and the rad. of the clip to tell if is real? I seen all of the other info and dont know if its right but I havent a clue.

Without physically examining the coin, I can't guarantee it's real. Use at least a 10x jewler's loupe and examine the edge. Look for minute, EVENLY SPACED scratches on the edge, or look for evidence of polishing. Check to see that the toning is even across the coin and along the edge. If the rim was mechanically removed either with a dremel or a file, it should show the evenly spaced marks from the grinding under magnification. These would not be evident on a clipped planchet, as the clipping is formed before the striking process. Planchets are made by punching a sheet of the coin material. The clipping results when the punch hits an area of the sheet off center from the last punch, overlapping the last area hit or punching off the edge. They are not broken or ground off at the mint. So any signs of scratching like I described would lead me to believe it was fake.
